Xenophobia is defined as a prejudice and hatred against people from other countries. It has emerged in major attacks, harassment and even murderer within the country. The perpetrators are accusing foreign citizens of South Africa for spreading of diseases, stealing jobs and sponging off basic government services such as electricity , running water and health care. It has led to massive deaths within the country the states  proves that each and every year the cases arise.

As public relations practitioners(prp) we are said to be the agencies of change, we come up with solutions to solve emerging problems, therefore it is very essential for us to be fond of different social media platforms, hence we use them as communication tools; though the use of social media is interesting and affordable; it comes with various advantages and disadvantages.  In the case of using social media to campaign about crucial issues like Xenophobia it is important to know the pros and con's.

The advantages of using social media
The use of social media to set awareness about xenophobia in the profession of Public Relations it set the visibility of the practitioner as the thought leader, it meets a vast number of general public, it is much cheaper to post picture and videos showcasing the incident of xenophobia, the viewers get the change to impose their view points, the public gets to see the actual effect of xenophobia; it provides a two way communication between the victims and the public; the victims gets the change to mouth out their side of the story and it also create credibility about the prp.

The disadvantages of using social media
The disadvantages of using pictures and videos to set awareness about xenophobia, evoke emotions to the victims and families which have lost their loved ones, it set the bad image of our country; ending up costing the economy of the country to infatuate because of fear from the foreign investors. The public comments can change the motive of the post, in such a way that it can portray a bad image; hence the captions may lack emotional connection. This creates the bad publicity if justice doesn't take place while the evidence is in store, the foreign citizens end up losing hope about the justice of the country.

In conclusion it is important to understand the correct use of social media when partaking sensitive issues like this, in order to not mislead the public with unreliable information; to maintain good reputations.

  7. We are one humanity My country is beautiful. We say “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” – a person is a person through other persons. I envision an Africa without borders. Why are we fighting one another based on our differences? Is it that we are steeped in anger, poverty and power struggles not corrected in 22 /23 years of democracy? Why are we oppressing people who were our helping hand when we needed places to hide? We call them “makwerekwere.” This is a subtle word we use in our circles suggesting the attacks are acceptable. Be careful, South Africa, not to become the beasts that you once defeated.

  8. In my point of view I think Xenophobia is an obstacle for greater things because it limits people I'm many different ways and as public Relations practitioners it is our duty to deal and help solve the issues that result from Xenophobia, because this issue is also found inside the work place which ends up creating an environment that favours some people because they are from that specific country ,I feel South Africa has to teach its citizens more about the disadvantages that Xenophobia has on a country and its level production and development .
